Jones County GovernmentJones County was established December 10, 1807, and named for James Jones, a prominent Savannah attorney, Georgia legislator, and U.S. Congressman. The county has a five-member Board of Commissioners elected by the voters for four-year terms. The chairman is elected countywide and the four commissioners are elected by district. The commissioners meet in regular session twice a month, the first Tuesday (6:00 p.m.) and third Tuesday (6:30 p.m.), in the Charlotte Wilson Conference Room at the Jones County Government Center. The Commissioners' office is located at the Government Center, 166 Industrial Boulevard, off Highway 11 toward Monticello. The city was named after James Madison Gray, who helped finance the Confederacy during the Civil War. The charter for the City of Gray established a mayor-council form of goverment. The mayor and mayor pro-tem are elected citywide, and the four council members are elected by district. The Gray City Council meets once a month, the first Monday, at 6:00 p.m. in the D.V. Childs Civic Center. City Hall is located at 109 James Street in downtown Gray.
